Choosing bold colors for your home can feel like a big decision. But for Kine Vestvik, who transformed her gorgeous 1897 apartment in Trondheim, it’s about letting her personality shine and crafting a space that’s uniquely hers. Her home shows how a bit of courage and creativity can transform interior design into something truly extraordinary.
A Colorful Journey
When Kine first walked into the 125-square-meter apartment, she instantly fell in love with its large windows, high ceilings, and amazing location. She and her husband wasted no time starting renovations. They preserved classic features like beadboard and high skirting boards while introducing new touches like ceiling roses. The wood-burning stove in the yellow living room got a fresh update with beautiful green tiles that perfectly complement the apartment's timeless style.
Color quickly became a defining feature of Kine’s home. She’s not afraid to think outside the box when it comes to bold shades. “I love how we’ve created a perception of depth by choosing darker, richer colors for the ceilings than the walls. It brings a sense of calm and cohesion to each room while—at the same time—every space still feels exciting with its own unique personality,” Kine explains.
The result is a home where every room tells its own story through color. Vibrant yellows, blues, pinks, and greens make their mark, showcasing Kine’s fearless choices. Her love for experimenting with color began in her previous home, where she tested out different combinations. “That home was smaller with smooth walls, which made it easy to try new shades. I hope people feel inspired and happy when they visit my home.”

A Reflection of Personality
For Kine, interior design is more than just how things look—it’s about expressing yourself through colors and shapes. “Interior design means so much to me. It’s my biggest hobby,” she says. Her home is filled with things she loves, and just like Kine, it’s always evolving. “I love that it’s never finished. That’s what makes decorating so exciting,” she adds. Her favorite room is the yellow living room. “It’s the wood-burning stove, the herringbone parquet floor, the Ball Chair by Eero Aarnio—and of course, the way the colors shift depending on the light.”

Just Go For It
Kine encourages anyone who’s thinking about using more color at home to just go ahead and do it. “Go for it! Pick a color you want to try and start painting,” she says. “The worst thing that can happen is you paint over it—and that’s no big deal.” By drawing inspiration from photos and trusting her instincts, Kine has created a home that’s both lively and harmonious.

Kine’s advice to aspiring color enthusiasts is simple: Don’t be afraid to experiment. Once you let go of the fear of making mistakes, you open the door to a home that feels personal and alive. Whether it’s painting a ceiling in a bold shade or using color to highlight smaller details, the possibilities are endless.
So, next time you’re deciding on a color, think like Kine: Take the leap—and remember, paint is forgiving. If it doesn’t work, you can always try again.
